Just in Case
Just when I thought I didn’t need a medical alert necklace anymore – I was wrong. Don’t let that be you….
I’m a diabetic, and recently I went off my medication, had it under control — and was feeling high on the hog. Let’s face it, I felt like I wasn’t a diabetic anymore and I got lazy and sloppy with the things I was putting in my body.
Imagine my surprise when out of nowhere my head started to feel dizzy. I just didn’t feel like myself. My legs felt heavy as I walked down the 2 steps that led to the family room….did I need to eat something, what was going on? Honestly, I just wasn’t thinking….so I went and ate something. Only after I started to eat did I then think to check my blood sugars….rut-roh! My blood sugars were on the climb – something they hadn’t done for awhile, and I had just increased that by eating more. What was I thinking? I wasn’t – that’s the problem…my head started spinning….not good.
Thankfully I knew to start moving to try to get my blood sugars down, burn some energy I thought….get moving….I’m glad to say my story ends on a happy note, and I ended up being okay – but just because your diabetes is under control doesn’t mean it can’t spiral in an isolated incident.
Wearing a medical tag is important. What if you collapse and you can’t speak for yourself? Who will tell the emergency team or anyone who stops to help you that you have diabetes?
